WHO GETS THE HOLY SPIRIT AND WHY.
When I begin to study a topic, I search a reliable bible which traces its translation back to the Hebrew or Greek, for all the occurrences of the word. In this case I searched for, “the spirit” “Holy spirit”, “Holy Ghost” and simply “spirit” knowing it would be too many as that would include all spirits, human, evil etc. The result is on the screen. Though in English they are given at least two different words, spirit and ghost. In the Hebrew and Greek, they are the same word, H7307 for the Hebrew and G4151 for the Greek. Obvious observations are The Spirit and The Holy Spirit are in both the 1st and second Testaments. Since there is only one that is holy or good, it must be the same Spirit given two different descriptions. We are told Yahweh God is the only God, there is none beside him [1st Sam 2:2, Isa 45:6,21]. That He is a spirit Joh 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him ...

Joh 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. So we can conclude He is The Holy Spirit or spirit of the Lord, of God, as most bibles describe him. Lord and god being Yahweh.
Why the single Greek word is translated into two English, spirit and ghost is an example of why different beliefs stem from the Greek translation of Yahweh’s Torah / Instructions. In the 1st Testament, Hebrew meanings are pretty clear. There is only spirit. By the time the Greek philosophy mind set comes into the translation, variety stems. Ghosts, spirits, numerous gods with various powers, traditions etc. One reason for the various beliefs about who gets the Holy Spirit, when, why and whether it is permanent.
As there are only 7 verses describing Him as the Holy spirit, I shall read all seven.
Psa 51:11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.
Isa 63:10 But they rebelled, and vexed his holy Spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and he fought against them.
Isa 63:11 Then he remembered the days of old, Moses, and his people, saying, Where is he that brought them up out of the sea with the shepherd of his flock? where is he that put his holy Spirit within him?
Luk 11:13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him? (but see Acts 5:32 given to those who obey Him).
Eph 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,. Hear the truth not a lie and believe it to get the promise.
Eph 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
1Th 4:8 He therefore that despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his holy Spirit.
Another problem with the English translation is when things happen. The “hath also given” or “has also given” as in some translations, gives the impression it is something of the past. Already happened. However, this is NOT necessarily the case in the Greek and why most wrongly hold onto the English impression of a past event, as they also do with when one is saved.
Now most Christians like to use the latter New Testament verses to lay claim to having the holy spirit; i.e. Luk 11:13 “to them that ask”; but they ignore many verses like 1Jo 2:3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. 1Jo 2:4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 1Jo 2:5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. (i.e. by keeping His word). 1Jo 4:6 We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error. A point addressed later; but I also suggest getting hold of a past presentation on 1st John.
Now for an analysis of the verses.
The Spirit in the 1st Testament used 99 times. Gen 1:2 We have the spirit of Yahweh moving upon the face of the waters. We have individuals filled with the Spirit to achieve a purpose of God. That Spirit giving them wisdom i.e. to make things necessary for the Tabernacle as Aaron's garments in Ex 28:3, workmanship in 31:3, to share the burden with Moses of leading His people Num 11:17. Individual judges to lead or save Israel. Judges 3:10, 6:34 with Gideon, 11:29. It did not come on everyone nor those transgressing God’s commandments except in accordance with His prophesised events. Only on, I think, one or two occasions did it fall on everyone and that was for a specific purpose. Here are a sample of verses to illustrate these points.
Ch 24:20 And the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, which stood above the people, and said unto them, Thus saith God, Why transgress ye the commandments of the LORD, that ye cannot prosper? because ye have forsaken the LORD, he hath also forsaken you. Num 11:29 And Moses said unto him, Enviest thou for my sake? would God that all the LORD'S people were prophets, and that the LORD would put his spirit upon them! Hag 1:14 And the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and did work in the house of the LORD of hosts, their God,
2Ch 36:22 Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the LORD spoken by the mouth of Jeremiah might be accomplished, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying,… Ezr 1:1 Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying,
Zec 12:10 And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn. This Spirit of grace is again mentioned in Heb 10:29.
Isa 61:1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; Isa 61:3 To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified. This is repeated in Luk 4:18.
I will like you to note that the promise of grace is to Israel, the promised Messiah was so “they might be called trees of righteousness, planted of Yahweh that he might be glorified”. Yahweh was not planting disobedient trees that transgress His commandments.
The Holy Spirit in the 1st Testament used 3 times. Not much is needed to be said on this point except the phrase appears similar amount of times in both 1st and 2nd Testaments. David’s prayer is a similar sentiment we today recite Psa 51:11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. Isaiah’s 63:10-11 is also relevant to us today. If we rebel against, vex or grief the Holy Spirit He could also become our enemy until we repent, plead for mercy and bring to His remembrance we are mere flesh regularly carried away by our own lusts. We are told in Mark that David spoke in Psalms by the Holy Ghost / Spirit Mar 12:36 For David himself said by the Holy Ghost, The LORD said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool.
The spirit in the 2nd Testament. As I said and I hope you accept, the biblical phrases of the Spirit, Holy Spirit and Holy Ghost all refer to the same being. I have already said in the Hebrew and Greek they are the same original word. So rather than separate and deal individually with each phrase, I will treat them as one and refer to verses chosen from each description. The Spirit was used 149 times, H.s. 4 and H.G 89.
Now let me deal with who first got the Holy spirit and why, then move onto subsequent receivers. After identity if every claimed believer receives the Holy Spirit.
The first person was John the Baptist Luk 1:15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb. Then we have his father Luk 1:67 And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying, Luk 1:41 And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost Then Luk 2:25 And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.
All these occurred before the birth of Yahshua and I think we shall see, the two are not given to man at the same time.
Then we have the messiah Yahshua in Luke 3:22 the dove descending on him and at 4:1 being led into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. Note Joh 7:39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.) The believers had been baptised, some i.e. his apostles received gifts as healing, yet none had got the Holy Spirit and would not until His departure. Joh 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. It is not until the end of John that they receive the Holy Spirit Joh 20:22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost: So the Holy Spirit does not teach anything different to what the messiah taught them and he taught the TORAH free of traditions or denominations of men. Here we have a categorical quality of the Holy Spirit. To teach and lead to God by bringing to remembrance what the scriptures teach. Not an emotion or feeling of the stomach, mind or other. Not falling down rolling around on the floor, barking like a dog etc as the Kundalini experiences of the Azusa Street Revival in Los Angeles, California, USA from about 1904 to 1906. This teaching of the Holy Spirit leads to witnessing by professing “the wonderful works of God” (Acts 2:11) so that the unconverted hearing you teach (prophesy) should “falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth” (1 Cor 14:25).
Now I feel I ought to comment on the “ye” or “you” in today’s English. Many readers of the scriptures are always looking for reasons to make themselves equal to God, or his chosen prophets, apostles etc. When they see “ye” they see “me”. I am a god, prophet or prophetess or apostle and I have the same gifts as them. As God said to Job, where were you when I laid the foundations of the world. So I say to these self proclaimed gift receivers, John said Yahshua did too many things to mention, were any of them there on the sermon of the mount and his other teachings? If those directly hearing and touching him were not gifted, what makes today’s tradition rather than commandment keepers more worthy?
Tit 3:1 Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work, Tit 3:2 To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men.
Tit 3:3 For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. Tit 3:4 But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, Tit 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Tit 3:6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;
God renewed His holy word to mankind, this time not by the Holy Ghost; but it’s equivalent, the messiah Yahshua who died for us. I use “it” in reference to the H.S. loosely as some may take offence saying I should say “He”. The H.S. and the Messiah are one and the same word of God in different forms. Hence why the comforting Holy Ghost could not be sent until the Messiah had left.
Next it was his apostles in Act 1. But the foundation of the event is found at the end of the gospels. Mat 28:16 Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them. Mat 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Mat 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Mat 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you. Mark 16:14 Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat.. Luke 24:49 Yahshua appears to the 11 in the upper room and says “And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high”. This promise was given in first / Old Testament which many do not follow. See Isa 44:3 and Joel 2:28, John 14:16,26, 15:26, 16:7; Acts 1:4; 2:1-4. Isa 44:1 Yet now hear, O Jacob my servant; and Israel, whom I have chosen: Isa 44:2 Thus saith the LORD that made thee, and formed thee from the womb, which will help thee; Fear not, O Jacob, my servant; and thou, Jesurun, whom I have chosen. Isa 44:3 For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring: (being Israel and Judah).
In Joel 2:28 the “all flesh” is later qualified by “your sons and daughters” (Israelites).
Christians who want to claim the promises to Israel, into whom they are supposed to be graffed always do so without keeping the commandments of God which they claim was only given to Israel, the Jews!
John 20:19 Then the same day at evening, being the first of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples (11- Thomas) were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst Joh 20:21 Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. Joh 20:22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost: Acts 10:40 Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly; Act 10:41 Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead. Act 10:42 And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to TESTIFY that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead.
{this is subsequent addition to article copies from subsequent emailed question. John 20:22. The discrepancy I think is with the word "receive" and when the action took place. In English it gives the impression it was at the time of the breathing; but this is not necessarily so in the Greek which has 6 or 8 (can't recall exactly) tenses compared to English 3 (past, present, future).
In Greek one of the tenses is termed "aorist imperative" (aim). In short "a command for doing something in the future". Unfortunately, we lose a lot in the gospel language translation, being taught by self taught Christians who inherited beliefs from "Christian church fathers" rather than bible fathers. Hence why I adopt testing my belief frequently to cast out the leaven.}
So far we have seen in the upper room Yahshua appeared to the disciples, eleven of them.
Now to Acts 1. Act 1:2 Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen: Act 1:3 To whom also he shewed himself alive …, being seen of them forty days, Act 1:4 And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father,. Remember in Luke 24:49 it was 11 apostles.
Act 1:5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.
Act 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. The receiving of the power was separate from and AFTER the receiving of the H.G. Most Christians amalgamate the two. It was also for wide witnesses purposes. John 20:21 as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.
Who were the eleven chosen? Act 1:13 And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, James, John, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James. Act 1:14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication… In verse 25 Matthias is chosen and replaces Judas “That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship…”.
Acts 2. Act 2:1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
Act 2:3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
Act 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. They had already received the Holy spirit when Yahshua breathed on them and said later they would get a power. Here is the power. Different to the previous powers of healing etc they had. This was the promised power for witnessing purposes.
Act 2:6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. Act 2:11 we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God. The apostles spoke other languages by the Holy spirit and the listeners heard. The listeners did not at this stage receive the Holy Spirit. The miraculous power was on the speakers not hearers.
Act 2:16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; Act 2:17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: Act 2:18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:
To whom did Yahweh speak in the Old Testament, through his prophets inclusive of Isaiah and Joel? Israel. To whom is the promise? Israel, descendants of Jacob and those attaching themselves to the TORAH though graffing in not a new Christian group. All flesh does not mean all flesh. Dogs, cats, etc. There is a qualification. “your sons, daughters, my servants”. To serve is to obey. Those obeying the requirements of the annual day of Pentecost got the benefit.
I know of at least one person who would still try and make a claim that everyone baptised receives the Holy spirit. The scripture they brought to my attention last week was Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. I am always grateful for objections to my studies as it helps me and the objector learn as we reason together. On this occasion the person overlooked the word “gift of”. Receiving the gift of someone is not receiving the person themselves. Especially when that person has numerous gifts to give. This also applies to Cornelius and his family in Acts 10:45. 1Co 7:7 For I would that all men were even as I myself. But every man hath his proper gift of God, one after this manner, and another after that.
So far we have not seen any scripture confirming everyone or even every believer gets the Holy Spirit whether at baptism or other. All may get a promise; but not the actual full being of the H.S. Yet a whole denomination, Pentecostalism and its offshoots, evangelical etc have based their theology on this false doctrine that all get the Holy Spirit, all speak in tongues, all get a gift. 2Pe 1:20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. Tells me that the gift of tongues is not for one speaker to get a private message for another as some claim today. They and others must stop being like Simon of Acts 8:18; wanting something through lustful desire. There is a reason why the recorded three times the Holy Spirit came on people, each is mentioned. Because it was a special occurrence not a regular one which every believer received as seen in i.e. Acts 8:18. If only 11 or 12 apostles got it and a few chosen others; but not the 3,000 of Acts 2, the later 5,000 and others who were commandment keepers and part of the newly formed, pure original new century church, what makes today’s denomination tradition keeping part believers think they are more worthy? If a whole Pentecostal denomination could get that wrong, I suggest you examine, from outside, what your denomination may have wrong as there is only one truth yet many perspectives.
Paul received the Holy Ghost before being baptised. (Act 9:17) And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost. (Act 9:18) And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized.
As did Cornelious and his household through Peter in Act 10:44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. Act 10:47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? Note an apostle, chosen by God, was the medium by which they received the H.G. Unlike today’s self proclaimed apostles.
However, neither is pure belief or baptism a certainty of receiving the Holy Ghost. Act 19:2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. Act 19:5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Act 19:6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. This was to confirm to them they had made the right choice in changing their rabbi from John the Baptist to the one he said would come after him, Yahshua as taught by Paul.
Now onto a wider group of the other 2nd Testament epistles. Let me quickly deal with 2 of the four uses of Holy Spirit in the 2nd Testament. Eph 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,. Most Christians do not hear the word of truth; but of denominational tradition. Those who do hear, dismiss it in preference to the traditional teachings of denominations and thus do not believe it and miss out on the Spirit of promise.
Returning to Luk 11:13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him? As I said many, thinking because they ask they receive. That verse is in relation to a parent and their children. Similarly not everyone that says Lord Lord are seen as His child. Many are children of the devil Joh 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. 1Jo 2:4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 1Jo 3:22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. 1Jo 3:24 And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us. Act 5:32 And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him. Some think I am harsh in speech with those who claim to have the Holy Spirit yet break Exodus 20:8 and Leviticus 23. I simply go by God’s scriptures. Two further of which confirms not all get the Holy Spirit are:
Act 8:15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost: Act 8:16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) Act 8:17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.
Another scripture brought to my attention to support a permanent state of Holy Spirit indwelling is 1Co 3:16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? But I remind such advocates of the history of the temple with various kings, especially in Ezekiel’s time. 1Co 3:17 If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.
People are used to seeing a word, taking it as a “type” and then substituting their type for the actual word. If they are now the Temple, I suggest somewhere in their body is a menorah, table of shewbread and once per year a high priest takes a slaughtered goat through their holy of holies stomach out the rear exit into the wilderness. Being the sewage!
This is how I see the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. You may or may not agree. Paul said in 1Co 7:40 … and I think also that I have the Spirit of God. Why does he say think have rather than have? Especially when it says in Acts 19:17 And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, Yahshua, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost. Did the Holy spirit leave Paul? His words came at the end of giving advice. In this chapter on marriage and unmarried women. He ends by saying he thinks the advice or “teachings” given is in line with the teachings of the spirit of God. The Holy Spirit, i.e. as God thinks. Unlike his advice earlier in the chapter where he says 7:6 1Co 7:6 But I speak this by permission, and not of commandment. 1Co 7:8 I say therefore to the unmarried and widows, It is good for them if they abide even as I. 1Co 7:10 And unto the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, … 1Co 7:12 But to the rest speak I, not the Lord: Here Paul is contrasting between his advice and God’s or Yahshua’s. Advice coming from his spirit and that of the Holy Spirit. Similar to how one may say, you have the spirit of your father, mother, so and so. An adventurous spirit. Entrepreneurial or wicked. You have within you. Dwells within you such a spirit. You think and behave in a certain way or have the capability or knowledge to...
Here are some scriptural examples of additional types of spirits that can dwell in us. I hope you see they are not necessarily permanent states.
2Co 4:13 We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak; Num 5:14 And the spirit of jealousy come.. 2Ki 2:15 And when the sons of the prophets which were to view at Jericho saw him, they said, The spirit of Elijah doth rest on Elisha. Isa 11:2 And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD; Dan 4:8 But at the last Daniel came in before me, whose name was Belteshazzar, according to the name of my god, and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods: and before him I told the dream, saying, Hos 4:12 My people ask counsel at their stocks, and their staff declareth unto them: for the spirit of whoredoms hath caused them to err, and they have gone a whoring from under their God. Luk 13:11 And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen year. Act 16:16 spirit of divination met us, Rom 11:8 spirit of slumber, 1Co 4:21 in the spirit of meekness?
1Co 2:12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; 2Ti 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
So when a Pentecostalists or other ask that common silly question “have you received the Holy Spirit or are you filled with the Holy Spirit”, and they think it is more than a specific temporal gift, guidance or similar, ask them if they are and whether it means they are like God or Yahshua. If the answer is yes to both, then ask them to create a planet filled with life. Because that is what the spirit of God did in Genesis when He moved over the waters. It does not have to be a big planet, just a little one like land of the Giants film.
The Spirit.
Time restrictions preclude me covering all the scriptures one may use to claim a permanent state of the Holy Spirit living in them. If that was the case, they would not sin. On that point I will leave you a few sample of scriptures that say sin dwell in us. That being the case, the Holy Spirit cannot also simultaneously be there, can it? Rom 7:17 Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. 1Jo 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 1Jo 3:9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. 1Jo 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
I think we shall see what the scriptures or Paul is saying is that after we have received the Gospel, the knowledge of God and what he requires of us, we hopefully have that knowledge with us always as a way to resist temptation. It is similar to a husband, wife who loves their partner, child their parent etc. When their own spirit would tempt them to do a displeasing action to their partner or parent they hear the voice of their partner or parent saying, I would not like that. And hopefully, that deters them. They want to do things pleasing to their other half etc. Constantly reading God’s words is like the commandment given by God to Israel, to tie his commandments to their door post, wrist and teach their children so that it is a constant reminder of Him and his TORAH so that, like the Messiah in the wilderness, when the devil comes to tempt us, even with scripture, we have a complete knowledge of God’s TORAH /instructions to be able to resist.
Here are some search results of “The Spirit”.
Act 5:9 Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? We can tempt the H.S by lying as did Ananias and Sapphira.
Acts 8:29, Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot. Act 8:39 And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing. The Spirit can send us to teach another and then take us away when they have been converted as Philip and the eunuch, Peter and Cornelius in Act 10:19.
Rom 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. Rom 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
Rom 8:5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. Rom 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
Rom 8:16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God. 1Co 2:12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. 1Co 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
Here we see there is the Spirit of God and our own. I submit that many claim the choices of their own spirit or that of the enemy (who operates in the disobedient) are of God.
1Co 3:16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? [In the temple dwelled the book of the law, etc. so those claiming to be a temple should also contain the law in their hearts and actions].
1Co 12:7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. Not to profit self.
1Co 12:8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
Gal 3:2 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? I think some people do not put this question in the correct context of the other teachings of the bible. Did not Abraham receive the spirit of god by his works of the law? Gen 26:5 Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws. Did Israel not receive the Spirit because of Abraham’s faith which was counted for righteousness and hence got the promise? Jam 2:26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. So put in context, faith in whom is Paul talking? Gal 3:14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
Gal 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. Gal 5:17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. Gal 5:18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. (The law refered to here is that of the second death which an unrepented sinner gets. I think the bottom line to this long standing apparent conflict of law and spirit is, both lead to the same place, via obedience. Similar to two generals in an army, each with their own squad. 2Ti 3:15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. Eph 5:9 (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) Eph 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
Heb 10:29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? From Zec 12:10; 1Pe 1:2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.
1Jo 5:6 This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth. So any theology or spirit with error, is not of God, His son nor Holy Spirit. I would strongly recommend you test anything you belief to be true with opponent’s of your belief. It may save your eternal soul.
Rev 2:7 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.
Rev 2:11 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death. Rom 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. Remember the law of the spirit of life is the word of Yahweh, His TORAH.
Rev 11:11 And after three days and an half the Spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them.
Rev 22:14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.
Post script A thought on reconciliation of being baptised with the Holy Ghost (Luk 3:16-17, Mar 1:8, Jhn 1:33) and receive the gift of the Holy Ghost (Acts 1:38). Note baptism is an action differing to the receipt of a gift.
Luk 3:16 John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire: Luk 3:17 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable. Mar 1:8 I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.
Most readers may get their understanding from Mark 1:8 which only tells part of the saying of John in Luke 3:16-17. I will not go into the Greek tenses of when the event of “shall” actually takes place, save to say it could be sometime way in the future i.e. even on judgement day. The time difference is clearer in Luke than in Mark with references to the underlined words above.
If I threw a cup of water over you, it is different to giving you a cup of water to drink or even another gift as a car. Similarly being submerged into water for baptism is different from receiving the gift of wisdom, salvation from the second death etc. I may submerge you and later give you a gift. I did both actions; but they are not the same nor took place at the same time. Christianity, especially in the Pentecostal movement, commonly teach they are inseparable and even should happen together as proof of being baptised i.e. the gift of speaking in tongues is proof of the Holy Spirit baptism! This is incorrect and provable by a proper study of speaking in tongues.
So how does Yahshua baptise with the Holy Spirit? Does he physically and personally submerge you in water? Joh 3:22 After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judaea; and there he tarried with them, and baptized. Joh 4:1 When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John, Joh 4:2 (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,). One answer is that the disciples baptise on behalf of the physical Yahshua while He was in the flesh and on behalf of Him spiritually after His ascension; though the baptism is attributed to Him. Another answer could be 1Co 10:2 And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; 1Co 10:3 And did all eat the same spiritual meat; 1Co 10:4 And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. Though Moses took them through the sea, the baptism was of the Messiah. A similar concept to that in Rom 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
However, when we come to the event of Cornelius’ baptism [Act 11:16 Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost.] John’s memory would indicate, at least on that occasion, a connection with the same gift of speaking in tongues of Acts 2. But we must remember with Cornelius, John’s memory and speaking in tongues came before water baptism. It also came AFTER Peter had preached the true gospel (Act 11:14 Who shall tell thee words, whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved.)
Another scripture for consideration should be Mat 20:22 But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? Of what kind of baptism did Yahshua speak? This is not a tongues study; but before one runs off justifying speaking in STRANGE tongues based on Acts 11:16 remember Paul put that gift at the bottom of the list 1Cor 12:10, 28. He also said it would cease, (13:8) and that it is of no use unless among other things the hearer understands the spoken word of the tongue speaker without the need of an interpreter (14:6, 16). It is a sign for the unbeliever NOT the believer who is already in church 1Co 14:22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe. There are only three occasions and of three specific groups who got the Holy Spirit and spoke in genuine tongues. Acts 2, the chosen 12 apostles to be testifying eye witnesses of the prophesised Messiah to the Jewish multitude coming from around the world to keep the feast of Pentecost. Cornelius, who was a man who feared God and kept his feast / prayer times Acts 10 as sign to Peter gentile fearers of God were acceptable. Prior to sign Peter was an unbeliever of that (1Cor 14:22). Paul to John the Baptise’ disciples to show them the message of Paul was true and from God. They were being asked to change their master / rabbi and allegiance.
1Corinthian 14:34 Let your women keep SILENCE in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but to be under obedience, as also saith the LAW (meaning God). 1Co 14:35 And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church. That being the case, would God break His own law and give them "speaking in tongues" to speak in church or to be an interpreter of any tongue speaker? Bearing in mind these verses says the speaker should ALSO BE the interpreter of what they are saying as with Josesph and Daniel interpreting dreams (1 Cor 14:5, 13, 15) ?Lastly, remember Act 5:32 And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.
